How did I get this Metropolitan Police warning scam?

Most likely through a pop-up window from a site you did not intend to visit.  I would guess that you are using Internet Explorer?

I’ve never heard of Ubuntu!  Surely my parents won’t have a clue?

Not at all.  It’s as simple (if not more so) as Windows and if they’ve never known anything different then they’ll never know.

And with what you suggest is all I need will they be able to browse the internet, make Skype calls and do email?

Absolutely.  And more besides.  They can edit and arrange all their holiday photos, store and listen to music – or what they call music  They’ll be able to perform everything that Microsoft Office can do, if they are that way inclined and all for the price I mention above.

Very good question.  Whilst you may have taken every effort to add and secure ‘Parental Controls’ to safeguard your children from the darker side of the internet that’s no guarantee that they’re not exposing themselves to the unthinkable.

Possibly worse still, they could be exposing your, their parents to a knock on the door from the police and you finding yourselves facing harsh penalties through copyright infringements.

Depending on who you have your email account with there will be some very slight differences in the way you must configure your mobile device but on the whole, whatever settings you use for, let’s say, Outlook or Windows Mail are pretty much what you need in your phone.  The fundamentals are the same.

If you have your own domain name with mail hosting, and I’ll use as an example my own that are hosted with Timperley’s finest budget email and website host, www.mtrav.me.uk then setting up a mobile device takes around 1 minute.

For receiving email,  incoming mail server; mail.jonnycav.com  A username to login, usually the full email address or just the part of the email address before the @ sign and of course the password.

For sending email, smtp.jonnycav.com and the provided username and password.  Sometimes this information is the same as the login details for the incoming server.

Beware IMAP / POP3

My advice is to always opt for IMAP on a mobile device.  IMAP only takes a copy of the email that is on your email server.  POP physically removes it from the server and moves it to your mobile device.  Lose your phone and you lose your emails!

Beware your telephone service provider!

By default, sending email uses ‘Port 25′.  Many telephone service providers block this port if you are not using their own SMTP service which usually comes at a price.  You can change this port to try 2525 or better still 587.  Some providers simply do not allow the sending of email through your own private domain.  If mobile email is important to you ask this question before you take up their plan. ‘Can I send email using my own domain/smtp?’

• Use anti-virus software and keep it updated. – AVG FREE is all you need.
• Use a firewall and keep it updated
• Let Windows apply updates automatically – If you must use Windows.  Linix-based software is worry free!
• Apply updates for other programs, such as web browsers, as soon as they appear
• Be wary of clicking links in messages you are not expecting
• If an offer looks too good to be true it probably is
• Never listen to a ‘microsoft certified engineer‘ who might call your home at tea-time
